Aggie slammed the observation door and jogged down the dull gray hallway of the Mills Creek Police Department to catch up with Bronson. A rowdy prisoner in a nearby holding cell whistled. She ignored him.
âHeâs lying,â she said.
Bronson slowed his steps. âIâve interrogated many criminals. I know when Iâm being lied to. Trust me, heâs not lying.â
âRay would never be involved in any illegal weapons deal, much less order a hit on one of our interpreters. Heâs honest, one of the best soldiers Iâve ever met and operates by the book.â
âYou were friends in the army. Youâre biased.â
Aggie followed him into the bull pen. Several officers looked up from their paired desks. Except Oz. He was already standing and handed Bronson some papers when he approached.
Aggie stepped around him. âI am not biased. I know him. If he wanted someone dead, heâd do it himself. Heâd never pay for a hit.â
Bronson paused at her revelation and took a sip of the coffee from the cup left on his desk. âSo, he is a killer?â
âThatâs not what I meant.â
âBut he was there with you that night in Afghanistan, wasnât he?â
âHe came with his unit, yes, butââ
âThen if heâs the one who pulled the trigger, accident or not, he has motive to abduct Leslie. Itâs my job to call in federal agents to question him regarding any crimes committed overseas.â He rifled through the papers Oz handed him. âBut I need more than the unreliable word of a criminal when I call in the Bureau.â
He grabbed his laptop bag from the back of his chair, inserted the computer inside, then slipped on his blazer and retrieved his keys.
âOz, do you mind running a full background on Captain Ray Mitchell? I want to know everything heâs been doing since heâs stepped foot back in North Carolina. All his locations leading up to Leslieâs abduction. If he breathed the wrong way, I want to know about it. Also, I want to know more about Vincent Savoy. According to our rat in there, he faked the interpreterâs death. Whereâs this guy now? I doubt its some beach like he said. If we find anything tied to Leslieâs abduction, then we need to bring him in for questioning.â
âWill do.â Oz took a seat back at his desk and started typing.
She followed Bronson from the bull pen and toward the side exit. âWhere are you going?â
âTo visit Ray.â
âYou just said thatâs the Bureauâs jurisdiction.â
âIt is, but to get them here, I need more answers if weâre going to find Leslie. Since her abduction is tied to all of this, it canât hurt to talk to the man.â
âIâm going with you.â
âI figured you would.â
She slid into the passenger seat of Bronsonâs SUV and didnât say much as acres of farmland passed by her window on the drive to Rayâs security business in Charlotte, NC. Aggie replayed every conversation, memory, and op with Ray, trying to make sense of the attackerâs information.
âI donât believe Alfonsoâs story.â
âWhyâs that?â Bronson asked.
Aggie pointed to the lingering bruises on her face.
