Aggie slammed the observation door and jogged down the dull gray hallway of the Mills Creek Police Department to catch up with Bronson. A rowdy prisoner in a nearby holding cell whistled. She ignored him.

“He’s lying,” she said.

Bronson slowed his steps. “I’ve interrogated many criminals. I know when I’m being lied to. Trust me, he’s not lying.”

“Ray would never be involved in any illegal weapons deal, much less order a hit on one of our interpreters. He’s honest, one of the best soldiers I’ve ever met and operates by the book.”

“You were friends in the army. You’re biased.”

Aggie followed him into the bull pen. Several officers looked up from their paired desks. Except Oz. He was already standing and handed Bronson some papers when he approached.

Aggie stepped around him. “I am not biased. I know him. If he wanted someone dead, he’d do it himself. He’d never pay for a hit.”

Bronson paused at her revelation and took a sip of the coffee from the cup left on his desk. “So, he is a killer?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“But he was there with you that night in Afghanistan, wasn’t he?”

“He came with his unit, yes, but—”

“Then if he’s the one who pulled the trigger, accident or not, he has motive to abduct Leslie. It’s my job to call in federal agents to question him regarding any crimes committed overseas.” He rifled through the papers Oz handed him. “But I need more than the unreliable word of a criminal when I call in the Bureau.”

He grabbed his laptop bag from the back of his chair, inserted the computer inside, then slipped on his blazer and retrieved his keys.

“Oz, do you mind running a full background on Captain Ray Mitchell? I want to know everything he’s been doing since he’s stepped foot back in North Carolina. All his locations leading up to Leslie’s abduction. If he breathed the wrong way, I want to know about it. Also, I want to know more about Vincent Savoy. According to our rat in there, he faked the interpreter’s death. Where’s this guy now? I doubt its some beach like he said. If we find anything tied to Leslie’s abduction, then we need to bring him in for questioning.”

“Will do.” Oz took a seat back at his desk and started typing.

She followed Bronson from the bull pen and toward the side exit. “Where are you going?”

“To visit Ray.”

“You just said that’s the Bureau’s jurisdiction.”

“It is, but to get them here, I need more answers if we’re going to find Leslie. Since her abduction is tied to all of this, it can’t hurt to talk to the man.”

“I’m going with you.”

“I figured you would.”

She slid into the passenger seat of Bronson’s SUV and didn’t say much as acres of farmland passed by her window on the drive to Ray’s security business in Charlotte, NC. Aggie replayed every conversation, memory, and op with Ray, trying to make sense of the attacker’s information.

“I don’t believe Alfonso’s story.”

“Why’s that?” Bronson asked.

Aggie pointed to the lingering bruises on her face.
